Standard 2D Blu-ray discs can play at 1080p through the BD-D6500 player just as if this Samsung device were not a 3D player. If you already have many Blu-ray discs, you won't need to replace them just because you'll now own a 3D player.

The Samsung BD-D6500 3D Blu-ray player is also capable of playing standard DVD's or DVD-RW's, so even older discs still do not need to be upgraded to Blu-ray format. The BD-D6500 does not up-convert standard DVD's to 1080p, only to 480p, so if the higher resolution is important to you, then you may in fact want to replace your favorites in your DVD collection.

Like most Blu-ray players, the Samsung BD-D6500 includes the ability to stream content via the internet. The standard "apps" are available on the Blu-ray player, like Netflix, Youtube, Hulu Plus, and the like. What is unique about this player is the new Samsung Smart Hub (or Search All) app, which allows the user to search across all content for specific titles. This keeps you from searching Netflix, Blockbuster, or Hulu separately, and instead just shows you where your choice of entertainment might be located!

The Smart Hub (Search All) also works in conjunction with the AllShare feature to provide search abilities across any device connected to the same home network as the BD-D6500 player. So, if you are storing movies or music on your home computers, and if the BD-D6500 is connected to your network, the Search All feature will find your content, and allow you to play it on your new Samsung Blu-ray player.

You do not have to physically connect the Samsung BD-D6500 player to your network. The device is designed with Wi-Fi ability built into the system, and using the player's menu, it becomes very easy to set the player up in Wi-Fi, and then to discover other content holding devices. If your router happens to be one designed by Samsung, it's even easier to setup since Samsung allows wireless connectivity through their own routers without the need for passwords. Locate the BD-D6500 player close to the Samsung router, and even a password protected network can be accessed without coding the password into the device.

What the Samsung BD-D6500 Blu-ray player does lack is an onboard storage unit. As mentioned before, the BD-D6500 will discover other storage devices on your network, so it can play stored content outside of a disc. The Blu-ray player also has one USB input, where content can also be played. But the D6500 cannot store anything on the USB or networked storage itself.

The lack of storage isn't a show stopper for most because most potential owners of this system will have high speed internet connections capable of streaming content, and won't need to store anything.
