The Samsung HZ50W digital camera is a compact camera with design stylings of some of the smaller DSLR cameras available. With a nice-sized grip, the HZ50W feels like it fits the hand more properly than other flat and square compact cameras. It also serves to provide more stability when using the zoom available with the HZ50W. At 26x zoom, the lens extends out much further from the camera than almost any other compact out there, making stability much more necessary!

The lens available to the Samsung HZ50W camera is a Schneider-Kreuznach Varioplan Lens, one of the more high quality lenses found on not just Samsung cameras, but many of its competitors. This lens is known for creating crystal clear photos and video with the ability to provide the same resolution at each point on the lens. The lens is coated especially to minimize any ghosting that could occur at the high shutter speeds available to the Samsung HZ50W.

The HZ50W digital camera also makes a nice little camcorder! You have a couple of settings for video, depending on how much quality you want in your photos, and how much storage you want to use in each recording. But the HZ50W camera is capable of 720p HD quality video right out of the box. Except in the longest of recordings or with minimal storage available with your SD cards, I can't see why you wouldn't want to use the HD quality recording since the lens on the camera is so very good.

Speaking of storage, the internal memory on the camera is extremely small, too small in my opinion. I typically use the internal memory on a digital camera as a backup when running low on SDHC card space. The 8 Megabyte sized flash memory on the Samsung HZ50W won't last very long at all when shooting photos, and is nearly impossible in video. So do make sure to purchase plenty of SD or SDHC cards when purchasing this camera.

The HZ50W digital camera, unlike many other compacts, includes both an electronic viewfinder and an LCD monitor. Use the electronic viewfinder to help you create a more stable photo by holding the camera close and without your arms extended. Or for a more casual feeling, the 3" LCD monitor features LiveView so you can frame up your scene prior to taking the shot or shots.

For a compact camera, the Samsung HZ50W allows for a lot of manual setup, should you choose to do it. Everything from ISO to metering to white balance are available to you as you are shooting. Even distortion compensation can be adjusted if you choose. That's a bit more complex than the average compact camera owner might want to adjust, but we think of it as allowing new and more experienced compact camera owners the ability to easily learn how to use the more complex DSLR camera setup in this much cheaper platform.

For a compact camera, the Samsung HZ50W has a lot of features that just don't compare to other compacts. We could probably stop at the huge zoom features of the camera, and that would be sufficient in giving the camera more than a competitor. But with the ability to manually adjust the camera to your liking, record HD videos, and to provide a really high quality photo quickly, the Samsung HZ50W digital camera really is a great little compact!
