Instead of the normal black one to two inch casing you find in most televisions, the Samsung UN55D8000 has this unique aluminum housing that is just a fifth of an inch thick. While showcasing the fact that an HDTV doesn't need a lot of trim anymore, the look of this television gives the display the appearance of hovering in the air, as if the picture were real instead of, well, a picture.

Because of the window-like feature of the Samsung UN55D800 HDTV's slim bezel and the huge 55-inch display, watching a 3D movie really does make the picture seem life-like, as if the characters are actually in the room with you. You can go a bit larger to 60-inch if you want, but we feel like LED displays begin to go down in quality over 55-inches, making this particular television right on target for a life-like picture.

Useful in both 2D and 3D is the 240Hz refresh rate. The refresh rate in current HDTV's is still usually pretty low on most models (60 to 120) and causes some to move towards the plasma televisions with their much higher refresh. But with the 240Hz refresh rate on the Samsung UN55D8000 HDTV we think the days of blurry pictures when watching sports, F1, or NASCAR will be gone from your world. The higher the refresh rate, the less blur, and 240Hz is just about as good as one needs to stop all blurring from continuing.

It wouldn't be a modern television without the ability to introduce apps to the television's dashboard, and so the Samsung UN55D8000 HDTV does not disappoint. The normal apps are found in the Samsung App "store" (think Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, and Pandora), but what we really like is the integrated Wi-Fi on this HDTV. No more dongles to install or even worse to purchase optionally. Wi-Fi is built into the UN55D8000 giving you the opportunity to stream content to your television in the best possible resolution that your internet connection and provider can bring to the home. If Netflix streams at 1080p without issue into your home, that's the resolution you will see via the Samsung UN55D8000 television.

Samsung HDTV units also normally have the ability to play content from USB drives and computers. One would think that something in the way of the number of ports available to the television would suffer due to the thinness of the set itself, but you would be wrong. The UN55D8000 still has 4 HDMi ports, 3 USB ports, plus a PC, component and composite video, and component audio. Everything you need to connect all of your devices is is still available even at 1.2 inches thick.

We know the Samsung UN55D8000 HDTV is extremely pricey and we hesistated a bit to review such an expensive television. But then we discovered the true cost of the television is nowhere near the $3,599 list price that is quoted, but is instead less than $1,950 (as of this writing). Yes, $1,950 is still fairly expensive, but for the price you get a huge LED HDTV, built-in Wi-Fi, 3D technology (with glasses), and plenty of apps to keep you occupied. All showing on a crystal clear display inside a beatiful brushed metal trim. We love the look of the Samsung UN55D800 3D HDTV and we think you will too!
