Sodastream Penguin Reviewed – Make Your Own Carbonated Beverages
Pin It
I can't pretend to know an awful lot about making seltzer or sparkling water at home. It's just not something that we typically do in the south, and I don't know that I have ever met anyone that has tried to make seltzer, sparkling water, or carbonated drinks in their own kitchen. I can however see the value in owning a product like the Sodastream Penguin. Tap water is quite frankly just very stale and boring, and traveling to the store to purchase water in bulk is just a giant hassle. Not to mention, it's not very environmently friendly. If carbonated water is more your style, throw in the cost of purchasing carbonated beverages like seltzer along with buying in bulk, and you will quickly be in some pretty expensive bills just for water.

With the Sodastream Penguin, you can turn the tap water already available in your home into a drink that tastes better, obviously fizzier, and maybe even a bit more refreshing. If being eco-friendly is also seen as a valid point, then reusing the included glass carafes with the Sodastream Penguin is obviously better for the environment than continually throwing using and throwing away plastic bottles!

It's difficult to find a used Sodastream Penguin, so the majority of options below are extra carafes. Owners of the unit don't seem to want to part with it!

Probably the best part of owning your own Sodastream Penguin or other carbonated beverage maker is that you can control the ingredients put into your drinks. As we all know, most carbonated drink makers fill their drinks with high fructose corn syrup or aspartame, neither of which is exactly a good ingredient to be putting into your body. Use the fruity or cola mixes that can be purchased from Sodastream or other manufacturers to use as much natural or organic ingredients as you wish for your drinks. If diabetic or hypoglycemic, there are also sugar-free mix drinks available for you also. Get comfortable enough with the Sodastream Penguin, and you may even decide to mix your own carbonated drinks. There really is no reason why you can't make the Sodastream Penguin a very personal drink machine.
How it works: First off, do note that no batteries or electricity is needed for this machine, so it's very eco-friendly in that way as well. The Sodastream Penguin looks just like a penguin (hence the name). To begin carbonation, you remove what appears to be the face and front body of the penguin to reveal the CO2 cartridge area. When purchased new, the machine includes two of these cartridges, which will last for roughly 120-140 full carafes of sparkling water. You attach one of the CO2 cartridges to the device, replace the face of the unit, and you are ready to go!
From here, you turn the Penguin around, push the little lever to the right to unlock the carbonation machine, and then push up on the chrome top section. This will reveal the slot where the special glass carafe will go. Fill one of the carafes to the line etched into the side with water. Tap water, water from your refrigerator, water from store bought water if you want, and hot, warm, or cold will work. If sparkling water is all you want, there's nothing else to add. If flavoring is needed, place that in the carafe as well. I do recommend putting it in before, though, so you don't go above the water level etching.

Place the glass carafe into the Sodastream Penguin, push the top back down over the glass, and lock it into position. At this point you are ready to carbonate, but there are two options to use. If simple carbonation is needed, put a finger on the penguin's beak and hold it down until you hear a whistle (the whistle signifies that carbonation is complete). If more carbonation is needed, the Sodastream Penguin lets the owner determine just how much you get. Pressing down on the penguin beak or pumping the beak will add more carbonation with each pump. You do still just pump the machine until it begins to whistle. Please do note that each pump of the beak releases additional CO2, meaning the cartridge will last significantly less time than if the beak is just pushed and held once.
Whichever method you incorporate, carbonation is complete, and there are only a couple of steps left to complete! Push the release button just above the lock on the front to release the CO2 from the Penguin carbonation machine. Unlock the device, and take out your sparkling water! Each carafe should come complete with a stopper so the carbonation can be held for an extended period of time, making it much easier to save your drink until later.
There are just a couple of issues with the Sodastream Penguin that I do want to bring up here. First off is the cost of the cartridges. While savings will be available to you by creating your own sparkling waters at home, the CO2 cartridges will add some expense. The trade-off is that you can make your own drinks and that you save the environment quite substantially by reusing glass bottles with this machine.
The other issue is the cost of this Sodastream machine. While the price has gone down substantially (from $250 to around $190 or so as of this writing), that's still a fairly steep price to pay just to try the machine out. If you are going to be new at creating homemade sparkling water, but are unsure if you will stay with it over the long haul, look at a used version of the Penguin above, or try out one of the other cheaper Sodastream models (Fountain Jet and Sodastream Pure are $100 to $50 cheaper).
I said at the beginning I'm a complete novice at creating sparkling water. But certainly after studying the Sodastream Penguin as well as a couple of other models of carbonated beverage machines from Sodastream, I can certainly see the health benefits of creating them myself. And I just can't discount the lessening of plastic in the landfills if more of us were to use a product like the Sodastream Penguin!
