Sony BDP-S470 3D Blu-ray Player

The best part about purchasing a higher-end Blu-ray player is that when technologies change, there is a good chance that the higher priced model will change with the tech. That statement fits the Sony BDP-S470 Blu-ray player perfectly. The BDP-S470 was initially released as a 2D Blu-ray player with upscaling for DVD to full HD quality video. But because the Sony BDP-S470 player is internet-ready and as such has the ability to download fixes and firmware updates, Sony can actually give you a really great upgrade!

I first noticed the Sony BDP-S470 player because of its entry into Consumer Reports "Best Buy" category for Blu-ray players, which was based solely on the upgrade for 3D and having such a low price, but the player does have other options for you to use making it a full service player.

The Sony BDP-S470 has been available since early 2010, but most of the options you expect from the device are here (now that we have 3D added in). It wouldn't be a modern Blu-ray player unless 1080p was available, and so it is. If your HDTV is compatible with 1080p, then you'll have the best picture available via the S470.

Just like almost every other new player, the BDP-S470 also upscaled DVD's. Meaning you will not need to purchase new copies of old favorites just to watch them on your new Sony. Standard CD's and mix CD's (MP3 files) are also playable through the Sony S470.

We mentioned internet for download the new firmware, but the internet is also available to you through the device for streaming content. Netflix and Amazon Instant Video are both available (if you purchase the content or have a subscription) As are Crackle, Pandora, and a few other select streaming centers for news and weather.

The Sony BDP-S470 is not a wireless Blu-ray player, so it will need to be plugged directly into your router or internet appliance unless you purchase the optional USB Wi-Fi Adapter. That typically runs around $50-$100, but if you plan on placing the S470 away your router, but still want to use the internet content, the adapter will be needed. I would instead look at the S570, which has the Wi-Fi built in to the device.

Really the only problem we can find with the Sony BDP-S470 Blu-ray player is the lack of storage and that the Wi-Fi isn't integrated. But the S470 was designed before internet streaming really caught on, and so you are dealing with a bit of an older box here. If you don't mind the lack of Wi-Fi being built-in, and want a cheap and bargain priced 3D Blu-ray player, then check into the Sony BDP-S470!
