Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-TX10 Digital Camera Review

Blue Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-TX10 Digital Camera

The Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-TX10 camera really wants to compete with the Olympus Tough series of cameras, yet provide just a bit more. Well we can say that the TX10 does a great job of competing with and surpassing those cameras (by far in many instances). In fact, it could have the name "tough" itself because the TX10 is able to withstand physical drops, weather temp drops, and even several feet of water, yet still keeps going.

The Sony DSC-TX10 is just the company's latest small form factor point-and-shoot camera. But it does capture the essence of previous Cyber-Shot cameras by building upon the go anywhere, be anywhere, do anything, "shoot it all" benefits of the Cyber-Shot, but with even more functionality than before. The Sony DSC-TX10 is really all that's necessary, in my opinion, unless you plan on making a living with your camera.

Just like the Tough series of cameras, the Sony DSC-TX10 camera is waterproof down to 16 feet. However, unlike its competitor, the DSC-TX10 does not have the slightly bulk plastic case to keep the camera waterproof, so it can stay slim and trim while providing all the protection needed. The airtight case also helps keep the camera functioning in extreme weather conditions (from 14 degrees to 104 degrees Fahrenheit), and allows for drops from 5 feet with damaging the inner workings of the camera.

The Sony DSC-TX10 features the new Exmor R CMOS image sensor which provides a 16.2 megapixel capable resolution for some of the highest quality photos that can be found on a point-and-shoot camera. The Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens provides the clarity to capture the best possible image, even in low light situations and works with the 4x optical zoom to get closer at will. The Bionz image processor allows for up to 10 frames per second, so even with fast moving subjects, you are bound to get the shot you want without blurring the image.

The Sony TX10 digital camera sports a large 3" LCD which works well even in bright light. Because the camera is so small, there aren't that many buttons, so the 3" LCD also serves as a touch screen. You'll use it to setup the camera's manual operations, scroll through shots already created, and to focus and/or zoom on your subjects.

The 3" LCD screen also serves as a video playback screen, for immediate verification that the videos you shoot are in full 1080p resolution. An HDMI output is built into the Sony TX10 so you can view your videos directly from the camera at a later time on a larger screen, but still just as easily viewed. To go along with the 1080p, videos are shot in ~60 interlaced frames per second for the smoothest video playback available to consumers.

Something that the DSC-TX10 can do that wouldn't be expected is the ability to defocus on the background, and instead focus on the foreground. Background defocusing is a manual switch for the camera owner, but allowing more control over what the viewer of the photograph sees is a hallmark of a great photographer. High-end camera owners are used to this feature, but it an now also be yours in a point-and-shoot camera.

Most of the latest point-and-shoot cameras allow the photographer to pan around and create panoramic images. The Sony DSC-TX10 is no exception with it's iSweep feature. iSweep begins working as soon as the shutter is pressed and will automatically put the shots together to create on large photo. Facial detection comes into play also, with the camera recognizing certain faces and removing distortion from one panned image to the next.

The Sony TX10 camera is also able to create 3D type images at the push of a button. With Sweep Multi-Angle turned on, the Cyber-Shot TX10 will take shots from up to 15 different angles, and put them together to create an image that appears to be 3D. Other 3D cameras need two lenses to accomplish this, but the TX10 camera only needs the one due to its very fast frame rate.

If you like the Olympus Tough series of cameras, but want a point-and-shoot that is just as tough but a bit less bulky, then try the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-TX10. The TX10 camera has more features, including a higher resolution and the ability to create 3D images. It also fits easily into any pocket with less bulk. There are 5 different colors to choose from: from a subdued black to a fun and funky yellow-green model. We hope you found the information you needed in our DSC-TX10 camera review, but if not, try the products above for even more information!
