Sony Cyber-Shot W530 Camera Review
Pin It
With ultra-compact cameras, something is normally left out. At this stage in the game, manufacturers pretty much have to leave out something hardware wise, otherwise we're moving up and out of the ultra-compact range! With the Sony Cyber-Shot W530 camera you'll get a pretty high MP range, image stabilization, a high performing lens, and the ability to edit your photos from the large for its size LCD screen. Even panorama is available on this ultralight camera, so making it a perfect little camera for keeping handy to snap shots no matter where you are.
But as I said, something is going to be left out, and with the Sony W530 camera, that one something is high definition video. The W530 is only capable of shooting a maximum of 480p, not the 720p or 1080p/i found on larger point-and-shoot cameras, and yes, even some ultra-compact cameras that compete with the Sony W530. Is this going to be a problem for you? That's really for you to decide, I suppose. A lot of people do in fact like to shoot video, and want the best possible picture for those videos. If the highest quality video isn't the main factor in purchasing a new camera, or if video is really a secondary want or need for you, then read on in our review of the Sony W530 camera!

I don't want to dismiss the video quality of the Sony W530 camera too much, because it is equipped with one of the better camera lenses for video that can be found in the cheaper cameras: the Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens. This lens is a 26mm equivalent wide-angle lens with 4x optical zoom so the camera is able to do record high quality shots in both stills and video. With this lens, the Sony W530 is capable of not only capturing large distance shots, but those as close as 1/2" from the front of the camera, for those that like to do a little macro shooting.

Couple this lens with the large HAD CCD sensor (1/2.3"), and you come up with some pretty amazing shots for such a tiny camera. In our tests, we found that shots in bright sunlight were the best (obviously), but low light shots were pretty good also, considering low light isn't the specialty of the camera. This is a tribute to the Sony W530 CyberShot having an ISO rating of up to 3200. Others max out at 1600, leaving low light pictures much darker than the Sony W530 can provide.
Something new to cameras that is gradually sweeping it's way through even the cheaper and ultra-compacts is the ability to create panoramic shots (see the pun I made in there?). Just like other sweeping panoramic capable cameras, the Sony W530 only requires that you set the camera to panoramic mode, press the shutter button, then move the camera slowly in the direction of the shot you want to create. Once complete, the W530 will automatically piece the shots it takes together to create one seamless panoramic shot. There are two modes of panoramic available, but for the widest possible angle, the photographer is looking at a maximum of 230 degrees.
Sony Cyber-Shot W530 Camera Photos
Don't expect a viewfinder here on the camera, nor any other ultra-compact, but that's okay. The Sony W530 is built with a fairly large 2.7" LCD screen which is nice and bright, even in sunlight. Sony made the LCD even more useful by providing the ability to edit your shots automatically within the LCD. So cropping, brightening, darkening, and other options are available immediately. If you have a long drive home from an event, you can go ahead and get started editing to save some time.
The Sony Cyber-Shot W530 camera is meant to be easy to use, and so includes an Intelligent Auto mode. This mode allows you to just turn the camera on, and begin shooting. No need to worry about ISO, or scene selection, faces, blinking, or smile detection. See a shot you want, snap it, and that's it. Intelligent Auto does slow the processing down a bit, but for ease of use, it really is worth it.
Speaking of features, the W530 does include smile detection, facial recognition, and anti-blink technologies, should you want them. All are available in auto or manual mode, so you can turn on and off at will. As mentioned, these features can slow the camera down, so we recommend when the shutter is going to be pressed continuously, it's better to have them off.
The Sony W530 camera is a stylish little camera, with a full brushed-metal body for durability. Standard colors of black and silver are available, but hot pink is becoming a standard in this line of cameras, too, and it's available as well. Blue and bright green round out the colors for the feature-packed ultra-compact Sony Cyber-Shot W530 camera.
