Stikky Stock Charts Reviewed – Learn the Basics of Stock Chart Patterns

Stikky Stock Charts Book

About once a year I really get involved in trying to learn something new in regards to picking stock market winners. It's usually around the time that something external is heavily weighing on the market itself, and it becomes difficult to figure out the market as a whole. So tonight, I was looking around my local Barnes and Noble at my typical trend following books when I noticed this little beginner book on charting stocks. The Stikky Stock Charts book is about the size of a cartoon book and seemed like a primer, but I've never really gotten into charting stocks, so I picked it up to flip through real quick.

An hour later, I had read through about 2/3 of the book, and couldn't wait to get home to start looking at real stocks to see if I could determine some trends based on charts! In fact, I probably could have completed the 200 pages of the Stikky Stock Charts book if I had not taken my iPhone out midway through to start looking at the candle charts to spot chart trends on the stocks I already own.

What the Stikky Stock Charts book aims to do is to show the reader in the simplest forms how to identify stock chart patterns by using upper and lower trendlines over a 2 to 3 month time frame. I can pretty much tell you how to do that here since the book makes it so simple to learn, but you can read more about it in the sample pages on Amazon's site. Just to spoil the fun, it entails identifying an upper and lower trendline on no less than three points to determine a stocks next move. Pretty simple, right?

Okay, so there's a little more to it, including showing how a stock will bounce off the trendline as it moves up or down, how to identify chart patterns like the "head and shoulders" top, megaphone, channels, and the elusive rectangle. Plus the book tells you what you should be doing with a stock should any of the 8 patterns the book defines appear.

Referring back to my comment about the Stikky Stock Charts book being cartoon like in size, the book is not by any means an extensive read on the 8 chart figures that it identifies. It is instead only meant to be used as a primer into the world of spotting trends by using charts. To basically perk up the reader's interest in charting stocks and then to take off on his or her own to try and find the trends in stocks by using the methods described in the book.

But that's not to say that you cannot use this book to determine trends. You absolutely can, and I've done a little research on a few stocks so far in trying to determine if charting would have shown the way on a few of my favorites. Of course, hindsight is, you know, 20/20, so it's easy to find winners using the charts when it's already complete. CROX seems to have been a good one to chart in the run-up to the earnings last week, and is one that I probably would have never picked. But it looks like it would have been a winner based on the charts.

As far as stock that looks like the chart could be showing a channel, I found SalesForce. It looks like it's hitting the bottom of a channel, which means (according to the Stikky Stock Charts book) that it will bounce off the bottom and move back higher. Maybe to $160 or higher. Don't know, it hasn't happened yet, but I'll be watching!

And that's exactly what the authors want you to do with this book. Learn how to spot trends in the charts, and then practice at home by finding and drawing the trend lines, and making virtual trades based on what you see in the charts. Do that, and if you end up with more winners than losers, maybe try it for real!

You can pick up a copy of the Stikky Stock Charts book for around $12 at your local bookstore, or as low as $4 online (see above). It doesn't take long to read the book, but the lessons learned may just pay for the book very very quickly should you decide to put what you learn to work in your own portfolio!
