Although the front element does move forward and backward during focusing, it does not rotate, so split neutral density filters and circular polarizers will not be affected all during focusing. The Canon EF 50mm f1.4 also uses the popular 58mm filter ring giving you access to numerous affordable filters.

The Canon EF 50mm f1.4 lens is very sharp, and once you stop down to 2.0 it is phenomenal. There is a small amount of chromatic aberration and barrel distortion wide open, but with a smaller aperture this is easily remedied. Color saturation is great with this glass, and minimizes (if not eliminates) work to be done in post.

With metal construction, quality glass, superb low light performance and affordability the Canon EF 50mm f1.4 telephoto lens is the 50mm you should have in your bag at all times. If you are wavering between this and the cheaper 1.8 save yourself the headache and money of buying 2 lenses for the same purpose and just get the superior 1.4 to begin with.
