The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens is a lens that no Canon owner should be without. For years, the 50mm focal length was the standard for benchmark testing as well as day-to-day use in SLR cameras, and this lens reaps all the benefits of years of constant competition among manufacturers. It's a very popular lens, and as you will see, can be purchased at a bargain!
When stopped down, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens is tack sharp in the center (and only slightly less so around the edges) and is nearly free of distortion or chromatic aberration. The lens is blazing fast with a maximum aperture of f/1.8 and handles low light situations wonderfully. Candlelit dinners, dim lighting at a concert, or candid pictures of the grandkids in the evening are all handled with ease. The wide aperture also makes quick work of blurring backgrounds to help keep your viewer’s focus where you want it – on the subject of the photo.

There are a few drawbacks to the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens, but they are negligible at best. The bokeh has a tendency with bright highlights to clearly show a pentagon due to the 5 blade construction of the diaphragm and can appear a bit rough at times. The body of the lens itself is constructed of plastic, but with proper care this shouldn’t be a problem for anybody. In fact the use of plastics helps keep the weight of this piece down to just a bit over a quarter of a pound. It is doubtful you will even notice the added weight in your camera bag!

The bottom line is simply that this is a great lens. It is extremely fast, very sharp, focuses down to 18 inches, and weighs next to nothing would be reasons enough to purchase it. Add in that the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II is extremely inexpensive, and it is a no brainer.
