I believe I'm correct in saying that a lot of old movie titles were fairly quick to lay out exactly what to expect in a movie. Clarity was the name of the game so to speak. That's the case with The Double, a movie title that once you've read the little blurb for the movie, lets you guess pretty quickly that someone in this movie is going to be a double agent. Who it is might be very clear within 30 minutes or is it actually that clear and transparent?

Richard Gere plays a retired CIA agent (Paul Shepherdson) who has spent twenty years in the service with the majority of that looking for and shutting down a close nit Soviet spy organization. At this point in his life, he feels like everyone within that organization has been killed and wants his own life to be much calmer and quiet.

Unfortunately, a United States Senator has just been killed in the same form and fashion as the leader of the spy ring he broke up, a leader by the name of Cassius. The CIA along with the FBI brings him back in to work with a new agent, Ben Geary (played by Topher Grace). Geary seems to have spent his entire masters level university years as well as his brief time in the FBI studying not only the Cassius spy ring, but also Paul and his time in capturing and breaking up the spy chain.

As I mentioned, someone in this movie is obviously going to be a double agent, and about 30 minutes into it, you will probably think you have everything figured out. Don't stop watching it at that point though, because it's doubtful that you've figured out every twist that this movie can take you on from this point on.

A lot of movies today have an over abundance of sex and violence and I'm guessing that's because the movies themselves lack much of a story to keep the audience entertained. And the lack of these items in The Double may actually make people who expect that sort of thing believe they are watching a terrible movie. It's not, though, but a well thought out spy movie with an excellent cast of starts who always do great work, no matter what movie they are playing.

If you have Netflix streaming or Amazon Prime, The Double is free for you to stream and watch. For those who don't have either, the rental price is just $3 to stream at Amazon. $15 will get the movie to your door for you to keep; and I think it's worth it, as a good solid movie that makes for excellent watching on a lazy Saturday afternoon.
