As a product review site, it's difficult to get excited about each product we review. First of all, the Panasonic HDC-TM700K camcorder does record in 1080p HD video. That's the highest quality you can get for a personal camcorder right now, but that doesn't really make the TM700K standout. What does, however, is the progressive mode of recording that this Panasonic camcorder utilizes. With progressive mode, the HDC-TM700K records 60 images per second and blends them together to provide a very detailed and smooth video. Along with the 14.2 megapixel resolution, the HDC-TM700K will give you a very sharp and clear picture at the same time. Other camcorders use an interlace method which uses two images to create one main image. This leads to a more choppy looking shot than what you'll find with the Panasonic HDC-TM700K camcorder.

To help the Panasonic HDC-TM700k produce a very sharp and clear image, the camcorder is fitted with Leica Dicomar lenses. In fact, a special f/1.5-2.8 aperture lens was specially designed for the HDC-TM700k to work in conjuntion with the progressive method in pulling in as much light as possible to create a brighter and more clear image no matter what light you have available. So if recording is needed at a low light time of day, this lens will capture more of the available light to brighten up what actually might be rather dark to the naked eye.

Most camcorders in the Panasonic HDC-TM700k's class are designed around 44.9 millimeter lenses. However, this lens tends to lack in providing close-ups of large groups of people or other subjects. So, Panasonic has made the lens on the HDC-TM700k a 35 millimeter wide angle lens. With the availability of up to 12x optical zoom, you can get as close as you need, but still maintain a really wide angle to capture more of your subject. Intelligent zoom is also available to the HDC-TM700K for a maximum of 20x zoom. While 12x zoom is probably going to be the clearer of the video, intelligent zoom does clarify your video a lot with the built-in image stabilization system.

The Panasonic HDC-TM700K camcorder has the standard 3" LCD screen for use in setting up your video or still shots, along with a standard viewfinder for those who are more comfortable using one. The LCD screen is a bit different, though, in that it is a touch screen. You'll use the touch screen for your menu options, focusing shots, or other scene selection type setup. There are a few buttons on the touch screen which help to start in the right spot when using the touch screen, but for the most part, the LCD screen is the "work area" for the HDC-TM700K.

If there's one caveat to owning the Panasonic HDC-TM700K camcorder, it's the cooling fan. And maybe it's not the cooling fan itself that is the problem, but that the camcorder's microphone is so close to the fan on the body of the camera. This tends to leave a good bit of background noise to the camera when the fan is running, which won't really be a problem if all you are after is an HD quality camcorder to record your childrens' birthday parties (i.e. loud). But if videography of nature in all of its stillness is where your interest lies, you may find the fan noise just a bit too distracting when replaying your videos. There is a wind noise cancellation feature to the camera for reducing wind type noises, and we recommend that this feature is turned on when a quiet atmosphere is needed.

For storage, the Panasonic HDC-TM700K comes with a built-in 32 gigabytes of storage space. You'll also have the option to add your own storage in the form of SD, SDHC, or SDXC memory cards, and we recommend you do so since the progressive method of recording video along with 1080p quality does take a large amount of storage to produce.

At the end of the day, the Panasonic HDC-TM700K camcorder will suit and exceed most of your recording needs. Whether you are making a video for your film class or just putting the family vacation on video this is the camcorder that can do whatever you need done, in the highest quality available! The experienced videographer will be happy with the technical features of the HDC-TM700K, while the home video enthusiast will enjoy the simplicity and the ability to grow into an experienced videographer.
