Thor was never one of my favorite super heroes growing up. Just something about a dude where his only weapon appeared to be a hammer that didn't sit well as a kid. Just a hammer? Seriously, that's just kinda silly. Add to it the fact that as Thor he was, well, kinda dumb. His "normal personal", Donald Blake, is actually a physician, so it's like the Clark Kent-Superman thing, I guess, where one is a little bit goofy while the other is very serious. Except in this case one side is very smart and normal while the other is less than eloquent but extremely powerful.

In fact, now that I think of it, there are a lot of comic book heroes that fit this goofy/not goofy persona: Bruce Banner and the Hulk (although gray Hulk was intelligent), Batman/Bruce Wayne, and several others come to mind. But in most cases it's the alter ego that's a bit in the goofy side instead of the super hero side, like Thor, where he seems a little off.

However, if the goal of bringing Thor to movie form was to stay close to the original characters, they did an excellent job.  Movie Thor is shown as kid and as an adult who just wants to smash everything in his way. Because of his rash decisions, his Father (Oden) decides to banish him on Earth to allow him to find his way back from the lost. As a part of that path, he also must find his hammer, but only after he's come to realize his mistakes. It's a sort of King Arthur meets Excalibur the Sword type of story line, but it works very well.

Part of this movie, like the Iron Man and the Captain America movies is to see or hear the little gems that refer to the other movies that are leading up to The Avengers movie, and there a plenty to find in Thor. References to the Hulk are apparent in conversation and Iron Man of course. Hawkeye is also right there, but if you don't know who that it, you won't see him, even though he takes up plenty of screen time.

Aside from my complaining above about Thor's intelligence, the movie is really very good. Yes, it's a comic book movie, and yes somethings in Thor would be difficult and impossible to duplicate in real life. But where's the fun in that? Who says a guy can't be slapped 50 feet back by a giant robot named Destroyer and still live? Nah, not me! It's all in good fun.

Because I'm not big fan of clutter, I highly recommend a rental of Thor on either DVD or Blu-ray. If you happen to be movie collector, then it would make an excellent choice to add to your home movie entertainment shelf. But for me, I just like to rent, as it saves money and allows me to pick up even more movies like Thor to review!
