Top 10 Cars Americans Should Be Driving – #1 SubCompact Cars

I watched a ton of Top Gear this weekend (courtesy of TVGorge.com), and one of the guys on the show mentioned that as car buyers, we typically don't buy what we like. He went on to say, that while we might like the orange colored car, we won't buy it because we are worried the resale even before we purchase it. That got me to thinking, that yeah, if you look around, it seems that is the case. I mean, how many of us, if we didn't worry about the resale value would really purchase a Chevy Malibu? It's a fine car, but not a particularly nice looking car, with that garish looking grill on the front. And the Malibu is sold with the most bland exterior colors ever: silver, imperial blue, black, white, taupe. Plus the Malibu isn't a particularly cheap car, either, so it must be the resale value that causes us to purchase it.

I don't mean to pick on the Malibu, it's just the first bland car that came to mind. But I thought I would write a series of posts on the types of cars we SHOULD be buying. Not for the resale value, but cars we might actually want to drive, might actually want to own, and may have trouble wanting to sell it in the end.

I thought I should begin with the subcompact or supermini type of car. These are typically the most colorful type of cars, because the owners are typically in their very early 20's, without children, just out of college, and they want something fun in their driveway. There are a lot of choices in this category: Chevy Aveo, Scion xD, Suzuki SX4 are cars that typically come to mind in the subcompact range. But most people tend to opt for a little larger compact car because the resale is better: the Honda Civic or the Chevy Cobalt. But if you want a subcompact car, then you should buy the cool car. I recommend a SmartForTwo.

"What?!? Why would I buy that car", you exclaim! I say because it's edgy, it's hip, and honestly it's just fun to drive! I mean, how can you walk out to the SmartForTwo every morning and not just smile? And that's what we want out of our cars. We want something that's fun to drive, fun to own, and fun to look at. Plus, the SmartForTwo gets excellent gas mileage, and can be built as a coupe or cabriolet with all the amenities you could ever want. Now while the safety record on the SmartForTwo is labeled as Good from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Ratings, my suggestion would be that the SmartForTwo is used more as a city car than a highway car. The one thing I don't like about the SmartForTwo is the lack of fun colors. But this car is so small that a new paint job in a color of your choice would not be very expensive at all, and might even be recommended!

Okay, so if you don't want to be THAT on the edge with a subcompact car, then how about the Honda Fit? It's available in a couple of fun colors: Blackberry and Orange. It's a Honda, which has an excellent record of safety. Plus it has nice "on the edge" styling which makes us happier in the long run about owning our car. If you purchase one in that awesome orange color you'll probably take a hit on your resale, but who cares? You've got a cool subcompact car which will last for practically as long as you want!

So, tell me: what subcompact car would you buy if you weren't trying to be safe? What purchase would make you happy to own that particular car? I'd like to hear your recommendations!
