Toshiba Camileo H30 Full HD Camcorder

For a little while now there hasn't been a middle of the road camcorder that you could purchase. Something that was cheap enough for everyone to afford, yet still had most of the features of the $500+ line of camcorders. The Toshiba Camileo H30 Camcorder has found itself a nice niche in the middle by not only being priced in the $175-$250 range, but also incorporating HD video.

Add to that the type of zoom found on higher priced cameras and a high resolution available to still photos, and the Toshiba Camileo H30 makes a great little bargain priced camcorder that can accomplish more than you would expect!

The Toshiba Camileo H30 Camcorder has the ability to record HD quality video in up to 1080p. Very few camcorders under the Toshiba H30's price range have 1080p available, but most above do. But 1080p HD video doesn't mean much without a high frame rate, and the Toshiba Camileo H30 doesn't disappoint with its 30 frames per second recording speed.

1080p video does eat up a good junk of memory and storage, so Toshiba incorporated three other shooting modes into the Camileo H30 to lessen the size of the video files. You've got 720p at 30 frames per second, which is almost as good as 1080p (and in fact most won't be able to tell the difference in quality). WVGA and VGA are also available, with WVGA having the highest frame rate at 60 frames per second. With it's wide screen capabilities, WVGA is the go-to for shooting modes when HD video isn't needed, but quickly followed by 720p when it is.

The Toshiba Camileo H30 camcorder also features 5x optical zoom, which isn't available in most of the flip style camcorders (the Sony Bloggie being an exception). Using the digital image stabilizer, another feature not normally found on cheaper camcorders, zoom in on any subject, and get nice crisp video or stills! One thing that might disappoint is that the image stabilizer is not available when the Toshiba H30 is in 1080p shooting mode, so if the owner of the H30 has pretty shaky hands, it would be best to record in a slightly lower resolution mode. The option to further zoom in, with the designed 4x digital zoom, allows for even more close-up video, but it's not necessarily better. Digital zoom has a habit of degrading image quality, so for the best possible shots, be sure to only use optical zoom.

The Toshiba Camileo H30 has a very nice 3" touch screen LCD display for the photographer to use in either shot selection, setup, or playback. Because of the touch screen capability, it's fairly easy to configure the H30 camcorder for how the owner likes to use a camcorder, and with the number of options available at your disposal, it's nice to have a way to scroll through those choices on an intuitive screen. The H30's touch screen flips out to a ninety-degree angle, perpendicular to the body of the camcorder, and will swivel up and down to help find the most comfortable positioning for the camcorder's user. The swivel will come in handy, as there are no brightness levels for the LCD display, so there may be times when the screen is just bright enough to record, but not bright enough to manage the video properly.

If you read other online reviews, you may find discrepancies regarding the number of megapixels available to the Camileo H30. Toshiba says 10 megapixels on a CMOS sensor, but other reviewers say that it's possible to get 16 megapixels. We find that 10 megapixels is the correct standard, and honestly 10 megapixels is probably higher than most would expect to find on a camcorder in the price range of the Toshiba H30.

One thing lacking with the Toshiba H30 is the ability to record in low light environments. The camcorder attempts to record as much as possible in low light situations, but will give the appearance of far less frames per second during playback due to choppiness from over processing the details in the shot.

With all of that, the Toshiba Camileo H30 camcorder is solely designed for the people who want a top-notch camcorder for use in recording family or vacation type activities. It has some of the better features associated with the higher priced cameras, which means great every day video and photos, especially in the daylight hours, and it's priced so that the money spent on it doesn't outweigh the benefits of owning the H30. The H30 camcorder is not for the more experienced photographer who likes to setup shots, likes to use low lighting, or wants to take creative video and photos. Simply put, the Toshiba H30 camcorder is a fun little unit to own with just a touch more seriousness than the gun-style, flip, and Bloggie camcorders that have been big sellers of late, and a little more enjoyment than the bulky camcorders of the past!
