The Acura MDX is a great way to get into the luxury SUV category without breaking your budget. First introduced in 2001, the Acura MDX quickly caught on as one of the top automobiles in the mid-sized luxury SUV category. The sleek lines and the ability of the Acura MDX to engage 4 wheel drive automatically when needed, but to cruise as a front wheel drive when not, further gave the MDX abilities not seen in other mid-priced luxury vehicles.
The 2001 Acura MDX was an immediate success for a few reasons, but we like to think that the MDX design gave the SUV the ability to look and drive more like a car than an SUV. The 2001 Acura MDX came standard with luxury items like a power moonroof, leather seats, and other refinements not typically found in comparable SUV's.

Other SUV's of the time could be bulkier and a bit lower than the MPG achieved with their engines. Outside of the Lexus RX300, there really weren't any comparable mid-sized SUV's, and the Acura MDX could certainly be purchased for a bit less than the Lexus, making it a fantastic purchase.
However, not all was well with the Acura MDX. The 2001 and 2002 MDX suffered some transmission problems, and so Acura had to issue a recall to replace the transmission parts necessary for optimum performance. The 2003 Acura MDX was a much more refined SUV, with no major issues like the earlier models, and as such became the most popular Acura MDX to date.

Acura still produces the MDX today, with even more luxury standard accessories than before. However, the items that first caused people to become interested in the MDX are still with the SUV: all-wheel drive when needed, and design elements that give the Acura MDX the look of a car without the bulkiness associated with today's SUV vehicles.
