Wagan EL9796 In-Car Jumpstarter Review

I'm taking a sick day today, so I'm not reviewing Wagan's In-Car Jumpstarters, but instead thought I would just bring it up as a potentially neat little product that's easy to use. Wagan makes several in-car jumpstarters for you to choose from, including the Wagan EL9796 shown below. The way they work is by simply connecting one end of the Wagan jumpstarter to the cigarette lighter of the car with the dead battery, then connecting it to the cigarette lighter in the car with the good battery. Wait around 10 minutes (more for a completely dead battery) and the green LED light to display, then start up the problematic car. Simple!

So obviously the Wagan EL9796 in-car jumpstarter makes getting a dead car running again extremely simple. No need to pop the hoods or worry about which side the battery might be on so you can line the cars up correctly. The Wagan EL9796 jumpstarter comes with an 18 foot cable, so that's plenty of room for two cars parked close together.

The green LED light helps also since most traditional jumpstarters do not have anything like it to help you know when the battery is charged. You just have to keep trying it until the car works. That's not so with the Wagan EL9796 jumpstarter. The LED starts out as red so you know that it's charging and changes to green when it's finished and time to start your car.

If your car's battery has completely given up, and there's no hope for it running again, then unfortunately the Wagan EL9796 or any of the Wagan in-car jumpstarters will not work for you, so you will need to resort to the old school jumpstarter cables. Traditional jumpstarter cables work to get your car started by using the donor car's battery in place of your own. The Wagan in-car jumpstarters are for recharging the battery itself so it can be used again. This is typically in cases when you've let your lights on too long or left some other item plugged into the cigarette light and ran the battery down. If your battery is completely and utterly dead without hope of ever being useful again, the Wagan in-car starters will not work for your issue.

In older cars, the cigarette lighter was always available to be used, even when the car was turned off and the ignition in the locked position. Newer cars will turn off the cigarette lighter when the key is in the locked position. I bring this up because you may need to turn the key to the accessory selection on the ignition to get the cigarette lighter to turn on. In fact, I suggest you do this just so that you don't waste any time in jumping off the car.
