X-Men First Class DVD Reviewed

I've long since stopped worrying about the way comic book based movies quite literally throw away the original stories and generate up a new one. In fact, most comic books themselves do the same thing now with their alternate universes or reboots (as in the 52 reboots by DC not too long ago). So the fact that X-Men First Class movies takes many well-loved names and mixes them up into a brand new Origins just didn't phase me at all.

Yes, I can point out all the inconsistencies in the original story line here with X-Men First Class. Like how Moira has never been a CIA agent yet here she is. Mystique was never Xavier's self-inflicted adopted sister, and I'm not sure what the heck we're thinking with Sebastian Shaw here (I'm typing as I watch). But that's the fun of a comic book movie. The directors can frankly take those characters and make an attempt at creating new and enjoyable story lines while not affecting the original character too much.

And probably the best way to do this is just the way the directors of X-Men First Class did it. Take those same characters (Xavier, Mystique, Beast, Magneto, Emma Frost), keep their abilities in tact, but just throw those histories almost out the window. If they do it too timidly, we end up with a terrible movie (Spider-Man 3). But if the screenwriters and directors run with the fact that they are generating a new story, then you get a really nice alternate universe.

X-Men First Class starts easily enough with pretty much the known back story of Xavier's privileged upbringing and Magneto's Holocaust experience. But then we're faced with Erik's (Magneto's) tormentor in Sebastian Shaw, and the story arch takes off in another direction. But this new direction is an excellent foray into a special little origins mixed with cameos from other X-men characters (or actors) that you will instantly recognize.

So, I've had it with blasting on comic book movies that destroy what I thought I knew about the characters involved. Where's the fun in watching something when I already know the outcome. Well, outside of the fact that almost all comic book characters never really die, it's fun to watch something where the ending feels like it's know, but then it's not, and a pleasant surprise awaits.

I don't want to leave the review without mentioning at least one thing that irked me. Otherwise, I would thought to be shilling for people to purchase the DVD only, right? Yeah, so SPOILER alert in the next paragraph, and if you don't want a spoiler, I would stop reading here.

X-Men: First Class Photos

If your best friend is laying on the ground after having been shot in the back from a bullet that you caused to hit him, it's probably not the best time in the world to start dividing up sides. "Who's with me and who's with him?" just doesn't have the same affect when the other guy is laying on the ground suffering what eventually turns out to be paralysis.

Wrapping up with the inevitable paralysis does seem like the best way to complete the early years of Xavier, Magneto, and their supporting staff, but this little bit of screen writing just seems so out of place and nothing at all that would take place between two guys that professed to be friends only minutes before.

But that's the way Magneto works in this movie and almost always in the comic books: always on the lookout for himself, no matter who else gets in the way. You really can't blame him though: the Magneto character did after all survive the Holocaust and I couldn't say I would blame someone to be a little more self-centered in surviving any situation.

Give X-Men First Class a try if you like comic book based movies. You won't feel burned like you did when watching Spider-Man 3. X-Men First Class is more like the first movie in the recent X-Men trilogy in view ability and entertainment value!
