Another entry-level home theater receiver is on our agenda today, with a review of the Yamaha RX-V665 7.2 Channel Home Theater Receiver. The Yamaha carries the technologies of today's entertainment components, but removes a few technologies that honestly most people don't need anymore anyway. More on the removal features later, but first, I'll focus on what the Yamaha RX-V665 receiver does have!
The Yamaha RX-V665 home theater receiver is built around a 7.2 channel digital tuner with 630 watts. With 90 watts of power through the 7 surround sound channels, the performance of the unit is very close to the top line entry level receivers. For $200-$300 more, you can get more powerful receivers, but if your entertainment room is around the standard size, then 630 watts will give you a solid performing unit.

The Yamaha RX-V665 home theater receiver fully supports Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD lossy formats for superb audio playback. Having those decoders available are pretty much expected, but Yamaha also chose to include compatibility for lossless audio formats Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. With those audio sources and the Yamaha RX-V665 receiver, you can expect this receiver to provide the same sound quality, bit by bit, that the original production team wanted you to enjoy!

You will have the option to connect up to four HDMI ready devices to the Yamaha RX-V665, and that will definitely come in handy with the multi-zone capabilities of the RX-V665. With the addition of the Zone 2 setup, you will be able to enjoy two types of entertainment through this home receiver, with your favorite movie playing in one room, while you have music playing in another. 2 channels can be moved over into zone 2, leaving what amounts to a 5.1 channel tuner in the main room.
For the surround sound experience, Yamaha has included the Cinema DSP software in the RX-V665 which uses "sound fields" to create independence among the channels giving a unique surround sound experience. Yamaha states that Cinema DSP gives surround sound a more realistic sound experience, with the sound being portrayed as if the owner was right in the middle of the performance or action. Of course, this will definitely upgrade the analog input sound that you get from your analog or digital devices. But you may also notice that the sound is better from your HDMI devices as well.
Finishing off the Yamaha RX-V665 receiver is the ability to connect your Sirius satellite radio to the receiver, but with the high definition sound that the receiver provides. If you want to connect your iPhone or iPod to the receiver, you can do that as well, but you will need the universal dock designed by Yamaha (sold separately). With the dock, the Yamaha RX-V665 will provide and on-screen menu to browse your Apple product. The receiver also can interface with Bluetooth devices (with the optional wireless connector), which means that you can stream your music from your Bluetooth enabled computer should you choose to do so. All of these features give the Yamaha RX-V665 a step up above the competition in providing a totally complete home theater system!
Yamaha did choose to leave out S-Video from the RX-V665. Yamaha felt that most consumers were past S-Video, so it was not included. The same might not be said for FM radio, but that's also not available on the RX-V665. Not everyone (including our family) owns a Sirius radio or plan, so not having FM radio designed into the product can be a hassle. Yes, you can hook up a stereo to the receiver to get your FM radio, but it would be nice to have it installed already.
If you need a bargain priced, entry level home theater, with a focus on HDMI components, Sirius radio, and iPhone compatibilities, then the Yamaha RX-V665 home theater receiver might just be what you are looking for. With superb surround sound that consumers of Yamaha products expect, it would be difficult to find a comparable 7.2 channel receiver in this price range!
